Safer Schools
In emerging economies, population growth and limited financial resources have led to school buildings being built on an ad-hoc basis, with precarious construction materials. Policy, planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance are not fully and systematically applied at each stage of a school building’s life cycle, which builds up performance risks that affect students’ safety.
The vulnerability of a school structure shows at every stage of its life cycle, with nuances across emerging countries: from planning (site selection, building orientation, natural hazard definition, climate change), to design (one design fits all load scenarios), to construction (material and construction quality), to inspection and maintenance (retrofit and resilience).
