IABSE

International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering

Aim and objectives of IABSE

IABSE is a scientific and technical association with members in 100 countries. It is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1929, with its seat in Zurich, Switzerland.

The aim of the Association is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide, in the service of the profession and society. Its objectives are:

  • to promote cooperation and understanding among all those concerned with structural engineering, by worldwide exchange of knowledge and experience
  • to encourage awareness and responsibility of structural engineers towards the needs of society
  • to encourage actions necessary for progress in structural engineering
  • to improve and foster cooperation and understanding between organisations having similar objectives

Vice President (2025–2029)

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee governs the Association according to the aims and means fixed by the Permanent Committee, and represents the Association’s interests in all matters. It meets at least once a year.

Among its responsibilities, it writes the standing orders that govern the Association’s groups, builds links with other organisations, creates non-technical groups, reviews the activities of the Technical Committee, elects honorary members, creates prizes and distinctions, and decides the location, date and theme of conferences.

Vice Chair (2026–2030)

Structural Engineering International (SEI) Journal

The SEI Editorial Board reviews and selects the scientific and technical articles for IABSE’s quarterly journal.

Chief Reviewer for the SEI Special Edition of November 2019, “Extending the Design Life of Structurally Deficient Steel and Composite Bridges”, in collaboration with Dr Charles-Darwin Annan.

Vice Chair (2026–2030)

IABSE Academy

The IABSE Academy is the educational and knowledge-sharing platform of IABSE. It offers diploma programmes, single-course E-Certificate modules, webinars, digital resources and professional development activities, with high-quality online learning for structural engineering professionals, early-career and experienced engineers alike.

I led the development of the IABSE forensic structural engineering diploma and E-Certificate, and I am currently responsible for its implementation.

Permanent member since 2014

National Groups actively support the objectives of the Association in their field of influence and develop their own activities, such as conferences, publications and design workshops.

Co-chair of the Bridge Design Workshops, held annually since 2014.

Chair (2026–2030)

Task Group 5.1, Forensic Structural Engineering

The primary missions of IABSE TG5.1 on Forensic Structural Engineering are to mitigate structural failures by sharing knowledge of the technical, human and organisational causes of failures, and to improve forensic structural practice by sharing methods and techniques for forensic investigation.

I chair the group, and I have been an instructor at several forensic structural engineering workshops held before IABSE Congresses (pre-Congress workshops), in San José (Costa Rica), New Delhi (India) and Incheon (South Korea).

Guest member

Task Group 1.5, Performance-Based Design Founded on Lessons from Bridge Failures

TG1.5 aims to mitigate and control the risk of bridge collapse in design and long-term life cycle planning, through an in-depth analysis of the information available on failures and their consequences.

Guest member

Task Group 1.13, Ship Collision with Bridges

Task Group 1.13 is updating IABSE Structural Engineering Document SED 4, “Ship Collision with Bridges: The Interaction between Vessel Traffic and Bridge Structures”, first issued in 1993, so that it stays relevant after thirty years.

The update brings in new information on impact forces and collision probabilities, and covers bridge planning and geometry, vessel traffic and risk acceptance. It applies to ships striking bridges at sea, in straits, on rivers and on lakes.

The group started in August 2024 and aims to publish the revised document by August 2028.
