Typology
  • Arch Bridge: Concrete-filled steel pipe (CFST) arch, and Reinforced concrete bridge structure
  • Span Arch : 280m

The main part of it is a 464 meter long arched deck bridge. The arch itself spans 281 meters and offers a clear span over the Plessur river and the settlement in the valley. At the south-western end of the arched bridge, the road turns north to meet the junction with Julierstrasse on the west side of the valley. The concrete-filled steel pipe (CFST) pilot arch acts as the backbone or framework for the reinforced concrete bridge structure.

The arch is a rectangular hollow concrete cross-section with a steel framework embedded in it to facilitate the construction. The rectangular cross-section varies in dimensions from 10.0 m x 4.0 m at the base to 5.5 m x 2.5 m at the crown. The bridge is conceived with a minimum number of sliding bearings and expansion joints to reduce the maintenance costs of the bridge. The structure has only two expansion joints - one on each abutment.

The zero point of movement for temperature as well as creep and shrinkage is near the crown of the arch. All pillars supported on the arched rib are firmly connected to the concrete box girder and the arched rib. This is possible because the shorter pillars (center span) are close to zero and the remaining pillars are tall and therefore flexible.
