The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge stands as the most critical infrastructure asset in Bangladesh, serving as a 4.8 km (47 main spans of ~100m and approach viaducts) multi-modal link integrating road, rail, gas, power, and telecommunications between the Eastern and Northern regions, with deck width of 18.5m edge-to-edge. Since its commissioning in 1998, the bridge has operated under a "substandard" restricted four-lane configuration, a compromise necessitated by the dual-gauge rail provision on the North cantilever.

The bridge was constructed using the precast posttension balanced cantilever strategy, construction spanning from 1996 to 1998. The bridge has suffered at early state of structural pathologies (concrete cracks) which lead to three (3) subsequent retroffit phases (Pier Head Unit - PHU- , Top Deck surface (road traffic only), and Inner side of the box girder (top web only). With the opening of an adjacent exclusively dedicated railway bridge, a strategic structural opportunity has emerged to decommission the rail track and re-optimize the superstructure into a standardized, high-capacity highway facility.

The technical services correspond to an independent assessment of the structural feasibility to transition to a full-fledged four-lane roadway, ensuring that the redistribution of internal forces—following the removal of the rail system—remains within safe structural capacity or alternatively to identify structural strengthening scheme is to be envisaged.
